Greetings once again from the Rectory Garden here in Aldwincle. Whilst the farmers keep reminding me to pray for rain (and I do, though I’d prefer it come during the night), I give thanks for the continuing lovely weather and the opportunity to spend time in the garden amidst God’s creation.

It is however quite a contrast from the news that comes to us through social media, radio, television and the papers. Whilst there are some signs of a flattening of the statistical curves which tell us of the increases in those with COVID-19 and those who have died, this last week has seen dramatic increases in deaths, each one a precious child of God, with family and friends who have been unable to say their goodbyes and as they would have wished to.

We’ve also heard of the selflessness of many on the front line who continue to serve in hospitals and care homes whilst not always having the protection they deserve and we’ve picked up on some growing tensions in the way the national response to the coronavirus is being managed. The daily briefings from Downing Street offer many signs but how do we interpret them?

This week’s reflection is prompted by some verses in Matthew’s Gospel chapter 12, verses 38 – 42, when some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Teacher we wish to see a sign from you’.
